Candidacy defense.
The fundamental and indisputable requirement for graduating is having presented a candidacy exam. This must be presented during the fifth semester,, although it could be done right since the third semester, so long as the Tutorial Committee approves of it.
Thejury for the candidacy exam is made of the Tutorial Committee plus an additional tutor proposed by the student and the tutor. For the formation of jury, members should come from more than one participating academic entity and external academics must comply with the signaled requirements present in the Operative Rules of the Graduate Program.
Considering this, students must present their application to the Academic Committee, and once the jury has been approved, they must let the its members know the decision, and the date and place of the exam, and also give all revised drafts of the thesis.
Doctoral degree exam.
Una vez que se haya notificado a la Coordinación del Programa la terminación de la tesis doctoral, con el voto favorable por escrito del tutor, se solicitará el jurado para el examen de grado. Éste se compone de cinco sinodales: el tutor(a), los miembros del comité tutor y dos suplentes. (Puede participar el tutor que estuvo en el examen de candidatura). Al igual que para el examen de candidatura, se recomienda que los sinodales pertenezcan a distintas entidades académicas participantes y que cumplan con los requisitos establecidos en las normas operativas.
When the Academic Committee approves the composition of the proposed jury, the student will have to notify them of the decision and give them a copy of the thesis. The jury members will have to give a founded written evaluation addressed to the Head of the Coordination of the Graduate Program in a period no longer than 40 working days, the first one of which is the day in which they receive their thesis. If any of the jury members does not give their evaluations in this period, the Academic Committee could substitute the member for another and the period of 40 working days will start again for the new member to give their evaluation. It is necessary that at least 4 of the 5 evaluations are favorable ones in order to present the doctoral degree exam.

Letter addressed to the Academic Committee with the following information:
Date, full name of student, title of research project, full name of supervisor, highest degree, current ascription, name of members of jury (their highest degrees, full names, and current ascriptions), justification (it must be brief and clearly presented, mentioning the reasons why that particular jury must be appointed; if these proposed members are not tutors at the Graduate Program it will be necessary to specify the relevance of their involvement), as well as a brief summary of the project.
In case one or more members of the proposed jury are not recognized tutors at the Graduate Program, these must comply with the established requirements in the curriculum and a resume of each of them.
Applications for the appointment of jury members may be sent to the email filciencia@posgrado.unam.mx or they could be brought to the Coordination’s office.
